Exhibition Introduction

Wang Huanqing: Artistic Creation since '85 New Wave

02.03.19 - 17.04.19

"Wang Huanqing: Artistic Creation since '85 New Wave" marks the first solo exhibition of artist Wang Huanqing. The exhibition presents itself in three coherent sections, featuring the artist's practice for the past thirty years in the form of painting, video and installation. Born in 1958, Inner Mongolia, Wang Huanqing founded "Mi Yang Studio" with his artistic companions in early 1980s, when he blazed a trail of combining local folk art with western modernism, which rendered him a remarkable individual case during '85 New Wave Art Movement. Since then, he has kept subverting and surpassing himself. When faced with the historical event and the period of social transition in late 1980s, he internalized his perception and sentiment into the depiction of humanity in paintings. In his recent creations, Wang Huanqing took one step further removing as many colors as possible till his paintings almost become the pure contrast of black and white, ultimately leading to a series of spiritual portraits of the era against the backdrop of the grand social theatre.
