Zhao Yang: Roma Is a Lake

09.03.19 - 28.04.19

ShanghART Beijing is delighted to present Zhao Yang’s solo exhibition “Roma Is a Lake”, featuring the artist’s most recent paintings. Opening on 9 March 2019, this is Zhao’s first solo show at the Beijing space of ShanghART Gallery.

“Roma Lake is not a Roman lake. It takes this name just because it is sandwiched between two villages - Luo Ge Zhuang and Ma Tou Zhuang. ‘Luo Ma’ for short sounds similar to ‘Roma’, which gives the lake a romantic feeling. I always walked around there alone. When the streetlights glowed more brightly in the dark, people started skating on the frozen lake. Then the noises became a surge of amniotic fluid...”

Zhao Yang, born in Jilin in 1970, currently lives and works in Beijing. His paintings wander among reality, Eastern and Western fairy tales, as well as fables, transform them into metaphors and symbols, and finally present the hybrid images to the audience.
